The green spaces in Orihuela Costa are in a poor state following years of neglect. The local municipal company Ildo has been responsible for the maintenance of these areas since February, after taking over from a private contractor whose contract expired in two thousand seventeen. Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the gardens and playgrounds, which show signs of abandonment and neglect.

Residents are particularly concerned about the inadequacy of maintenance services offered by Ildo. A comparison between the previous bidding process of ten million euros for five years, covering more areas and resources, and the current municipal plan reveals gaps. The current maintenance service only covers one point one million square metres compared to the two point five million covered previously.

The homeowners association Unidos por la Costa has raised alarms over several urbanisations falling outside of the maintenance plan. This includes key areas like Lomas de Campoamor and Las Colinas. Additionally, over four thousand three hundred palm trees are excluded from upkeep, alongside diminished standards for irrigation and playground facilities.

The manager of Ildo, Mercedes González, is confident that the municipal company has the resources needed to improve conditions going forward. Residents and community groups await a response from the local council regarding concerns over the adequacy of the new maintenance plans, with time poised to reveal if the newly implemented strategies will yield positive results.
