Seventeen people have been arrested in a significant operation against cannabis trafficking in the Vega Baja area, specifically in the towns of Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar del Segura, and Rojales. The operation, named ‘Acido Veintitres’, was led by the Guardia Civil who uncovered a criminal network that was posing as cannabis associations. Authorities initiated this investigation after reports were made to the Anti-Drug Special Prosecutor’s Office regarding a newly registered association.

The operation was catalysed by a rise in complaints concerning drug possession and consumption, particularly among foreign nationals in the area. Investigators found that the suspected associations, though claiming to operate without profit, were allegedly functioning as drug-dealing fronts. The investigation, which commenced in March twenty twenty-three, spanned more than a year and unfolded over six phases.

During multiple raids conducted between November twenty twenty-four and March twenty twenty-five, authorities seized approximately ten kilograms of cannabis, along with cannabis-related products. Raids also uncovered a small laboratory that produced hashish, oils, and cannabis-infused sweets. Furthermore, agents found over seven hundred prepared cannabis rolls and cash amounting to four thousand two hundred ninety-eight euros and seventy-eight cents.

All seventeen individuals, comprising eleven men and six women aged between twenty-six and sixty-nine from Spain, Britain, Colombia, Russia, and Finland, were released after judicial proceedings while facing precautionary measures. The relevant judicial authorities have also mandated the closure of the implicated associations for five years. The Guardia Civil has emphasised its ongoing commitment to combat drug trafficking and the importance of community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
