Benidorm might be on the brink of establishing its first dedicated stopover for motorhomes. The proposal, put forth by the company Melmus Activos SL, seeks to create a facility with two hundred eighty-four spaces across twenty-nine thousand square metres in the city’s Marxassos district. This area is strategically located near the N-332 road and close to the Salt de l’Aigua school zone, currently situated within an industrial estate that is undeveloped.

The development aims to meet the rising demand for motorhome tourism, similar to neighbouring towns like Finestrat and l’Alfàs del Pi, which have successfully established overnight parking provisions for motorhomes. Should the project move forward, it will not only include the stopover spaces but also a central recreational area, along with essential amenities such as toilets, showers, and a round-the-clock reception point.

At present, the initiative is in its initial phases, with a public consultation process open until the end of May. Following this feedback period, the Ministry of Environment, Infrastructure and Territory will assess the input and determine if the proposal can progress. This assessment involves a Declaration of Community Interest, assessing the site’s viability for development.

If approved, this stopover would signal a significant policy shift in Benidorm’s approach to motorhome tourism, which has been largely restricted until now. Local authorities hope that this development will entice more motorhome travellers to visit the area, providing a needed boost to local tourism. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the ongoing consultation before a final decision is made by the regional government.
