The government board of Torrevieja has approved the bidding for a new ten-year urban transport contract, amounting to one hundred fifteen million four hundred forty thousand and five euros, plus VAT. Operating without a formal contract since twenty twelve, the service has faced difficulties in processing monthly bills of around two hundred sixty thousand euros. This new agreement, a long-standing goal of Mayor Eduardo Dolón, aims to bring significant improvements to the urban transport system.

Mayor Dolón highlighted the importance of this overhaul, stating that modernisation will enhance service frequency, punctuality, quality, user comfort, and environmental sustainability. The new contract will see the deployment of thirty-two buses, including twenty-six hybrid and six electric. This shift underlines the commitment to sustainable mobility and reduced emissions. In addition, the number of personnel involved in the system will more than double, ensuring better service delivery.

The planned service will introduce nine new daytime lines and three nighttime lines, expanding coverage to key areas including hospitals, schools, and residential zones. Improved operating hours will allow for greater accessibility, with buses running from seven in the morning until ten thirty in the evening during off-peak times, and until midnight during peak seasons.

The ticket pricing structure will feature multiple options, including free travel for seniors and discounted fares for younger passengers under twenty-six and large families. An annual subsidy of eight million euros from the council is projected to keep transport prices affordable for all users. With construction of new facilities and the implementation of real-time user information systems, the new transport service will not only be more efficient but also cater better to the needs of the community.
