The installation of shade sails in Elche commenced this week, targeting some of the city’s prominent commercial streets, including Obispo Tormo, Hospital, Major del Pla, and Corredora. This effort is part of the Shade Plan and aims to alleviate summer heat while enhancing the comfort of pedestrians.

Public Services Councillor Claudio Guilabert stated that this initiative is a positive step forward, reflecting the municipal government’s commitment to providing shade for residents and visitors alike. The councillor noted that the installation focuses on improving climate comfort in Elche during the hottest months of the year.

The primary goal of the shade sails is to lower temperatures in urban areas, encouraging a more pleasant environment for shopping and socialising. Guilabert emphasised that creating shaded spaces will also help boost local business activity and attract tourists with more agreeable walkways.

This project involves an investment of two hundred ninety-seven thousand euros. The shade sails will be the property of the municipality, set up in May and taken down between September and October, depending on weather conditions. Planning is already underway to extend the installation to other commercial streets next year, including areas in Altabix, El Pla-Sector V, and Carrús.
