The Franz Weber Foundation has called for a ban on dolphin and sea lion shows at Mundomar in Benidorm. The organisation is campaigning for changes to Spanish legislation governing the use of cetaceans in zoos and aquariums, drawing on restrictions introduced in France.

The foundation has also proposed the gradual transfer of cetaceans to specialist sanctuaries where possible. It argues that Spain’s current Animal Rights and Welfare Law allows dolphin shows to continue, despite restricting the use of other captive wild species in circuses.

The organisation questions the educational value of Mundomar’s dolphin demonstrations and direct-interaction experiences involving dolphins and sea lions. It says these activities reduce cetaceans to entertainment objects and do not contribute to conservation or public education.

The foundation has cited research into the effects of captivity on cetaceans, including their intelligence, social relationships, long lifespans and extensive movements in the wild. It says Spain has one of the European Union’s highest numbers of dolphinariums, with about 100 dolphins and six orcas, and plans to promote a legislative initiative aimed at ending cetacean shows.
