Torrevieja Council has approved further extensions to two of the three redevelopment projects under way around the port, beside the new Paseo del Mar leisure centre. The pedestrian esplanade planned for the fairground now has a completion deadline of 22 October. The promenade along the fishing quay and its surroundings is expected to be finished by 15 October.

The council has accepted the contractors’ explanations for the delays and has not applied the penalties set out in the contracts. The municipal legal services director has repeatedly warned against systematically extending deadlines or increasing project budgets.

The fairground esplanade is being built by a company from the Hozono Global group. The quay works, being carried out by González Soto, still include paving, landscaping and installing street furniture around the fishing quay and the customs entrance. The council says the works have been affected by the need to coordinate construction with the opening of the leisure centre.

The fairground traders have not been given a firm moving date. They want to transfer all the attractions at once, rather than split them between the existing site and the new 5,000-square-metre area already handed over. The council is working on a new fee and specific rules for the site, covering access, exits, maintenance and its proper use.
