Firefighters from the Vega Sur station in Torrevieja have rescued a fox after it accidentally fell into an irrigation reservoir in Los Montesinos. Emergency services received the call on Tuesday, 25 August, after the animal became trapped in the water and could not get out unaided.
Firefighters found the fox exhausted and unable to climb the reservoir’s steep, slippery sides. One member of the team entered the water, reached the animal and carried it to safety. The fox was then able to leave the danger area and continue in the wild.
The rescue highlights the risks that irrigation reservoirs, wells, channels and other agricultural infrastructure can pose to wildlife in the Vega Baja. It also shows that the work of firefighters extends beyond tackling fires and dealing with accidents, including urgent assistance for animals in danger.
