Plans to dual the N-332 bypass through Torrevieja are not expected to begin soon, despite the road carrying up to 55,000 vehicles a day during the busiest periods in July and August. The delays have also affected major approaches to the town, particularly the CV-95 and CV-905, where queues form at junctions with the N-332.

Road professionals working in the area have informally proposed creating a temporary third lane in whichever direction has the heavier traffic. The Guardia Civil and the Directorate-General for Traffic have used similar temporary arrangements on major roads during holiday periods.

However, the existing bypass has only two 3.5-metre lanes, giving it a seven-metre-wide carriageway. A conventional third lane would require 10.5 metres just for the lanes, so engineers would need to assess the use of the hard shoulders, drainage, side safety and access arrangements. The proposal would therefore involve more than simply repainting the road markings.

Traffic has been particularly heavy this summer, with queues in the direction of Cartagena sometimes stretching the full eight-kilometre bypass to Hospital Quirón. The proposed temporary measure follows earlier calls, including a 2019 request for reversible lanes during periods of peak traffic.
