Wastewater discharge continues at Cala de la Mosca beach

A wastewater discharge at Cala de la Mosca beach in Orihuela Costa has been flowing continuously into the sea and appears to have increased in recent days. The discharge runs for about 70 metres from beneath the promenade to the shoreline, with residents saying the problem becomes worse during July and August.

The water is believed to be coming from an overflow connected to the sewage pumping network, although it is not clear which pumping station is involved. A pumping station near the promenade sends wastewater towards the coastal treatment plant, while two others are located near the N-332. Local residents say the discharge has occurred repeatedly in recent years.

Orihuela Council has not announced any restriction on swimming. Sources close to the beaches councillor, Manuel Mestre, have pointed to weekly tests by the Generalitat’s water authority, which recorded excellent seawater quality on 16 August. The beach lost its Blue Flag temporarily in 2023 and 2024, and permanently in 2025, reportedly because of the discharges.

Earlier in 2026, a Guardia Civil investigation reportedly identified an overflow pipe linked to a pumping station at the Horizonte development, more than a kilometre from the beach. The council has said future funding from residential land sales could help improve water and sewage infrastructure, which it acknowledges is under pressure during the tourist season.
