The Guardia Civil has confirmed a large-scale national security operation ahead of the total solar eclipse taking place on 12 August, an event expected to draw significant numbers of visitors across Spain.

More than 24,000 officers will be deployed across the country, operating by land, sea and air. The force will reinforce public safety, manage mobility and protect the environment at key observation sites. Over 660 viewing points within Guardia Civil areas – representing 84% of all identified locations nationwide – will be monitored.

Officers from Traffic, Citizen Security, SEPRONA, the Maritime and Air Services, mountain and underwater rescue units, and specialist border and fiscal teams will take part. The operation will be supported by drones, mobile offices and advanced command units, working in coordination with the Directorate-General for Traffic, Civil Protection and regional and local authorities.

The Guardia Civil has urged the public to plan journeys in advance, park only in authorised areas and follow official guidance. Visitors are also being reminded to respect natural spaces, avoid lighting fires where prohibited and keep emergency access routes clear.
