Temperatures climbed sharply across the Valencian Community yesterday, reaching 40.6C in Ontinyent, in the province of Valencia, according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet. The town was among the hottest places of the day, confirming another spell of intense summer heat inland.

In Valencia province, Carcaixent recorded 39.8C and Xàtiva 39.6C, while Bicorp reached 38.5C. In Alicante province, Orihuela hit 39.7C and Elche 38.2C. Pego and Novelda both recorded 37.6C, with Villena at 37.5C and Rojales and Pinoso at 37.2C.

By contrast, provincial capitals were noticeably cooler. Alicante reached 33C, Castelló 32.6C and València 31.6C, only slightly higher than the previous day.

Aemet said the combination of clear skies, strong sunshine and very warm air masses had driven the rise in temperatures. As is typical during Mediterranean heat episodes, inland areas have experienced the most extreme conditions, while coastal districts have benefited from the moderating effect of sea breezes.
