Torrevieja’s new mobility unit has begun issuing fines for illegal parking across the town centre, after starting duties in mid-July. The 20 agents, supported by a supervisor and 10 motorcycles, have focused on busy streets such as Ramón Gallud and on traffic around the Paseo del Mar car park.

The unit officially took up post on 11 July following a specific training period. They initially managed traffic during the Virgen del Carmen procession and are now overseeing congestion hotspots, bus lanes, loading bays and spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility.

In 2025, Torrevieja City Council issued traffic fines worth €1.4 million. While some drivers have reacted angrily to the tougher enforcement, bus and taxi drivers say the decision was overdue, noting that stops such as Fontana are no longer blocked by cars parked in second rows.

The council says the unit will allow the Local Police, which has around 170 officers, to focus more on public safety duties. The mobility agents, who are interim civil servants appointed for an initial one-year term, will also regulate traffic at schools when the new academic year begins.
