Residents in Orihuela Costa have announced a protest over the lack of accessible routes to Barranco Rubio beach. The gathering will be held this Saturday at 12:00 in Calle Calderón de la Barca, outside the Miraver building in Dehesa de Campoamor, under the slogan “for an accessible beach”.

The Neighbours and Associations of Dehesa de Campoamor (AVA) say lifts providing access to the beach have been out of service since 2023. Although municipal budgets included €250,000 for three new lifts two years ago, only one of the two existing lifts in the private Miraver building is currently working, and the other has been out of action for four summers.

A shuttle service has been offered as a temporary alternative, but residents say it has operated intermittently and unreliably. They argue that, despite Barranco Rubio having adapted bathing services for people with disabilities, there is no practical way for many users to reach the sand independently.

Local groups have also raised concerns about poor maintenance of the Campoamor pine woods, the condition of the Nacimiento riverbed, and what they describe as inadequate daily refuse collection. They say further demonstrations could follow if long-standing infrastructure and service issues are not addressed.
