Two people have been reported by the Guardia Civil for allegedly catching more than 60 kilogrammes of fish illegally in waters off El Gorguel, Cartagena.
The intervention took place last Sunday during a routine maritime surveillance patrol. Officers from the Maritime Service spotted a recreational vessel sailing near the El Gorguel aquaculture zone, a protected area where fishing is restricted.
After identifying the vessel, officers found six large specimens of Atlantic bonito (Euthynnus alletteratus) on board, weighing more than 60 kilogrammes in total. The catch exceeded the maximum legal limit for recreational fishing by five kilogrammes per person and was allegedly taken from a prohibited area.
The Guardia Civil has submitted formal reports to the relevant authorities for breaches of fishing regulations. After confirming the fish were fit for human consumption, officers donated the seized catch to local charitable organisations.
