Three people have gone on trial at the Provincial Court of Alicante accused of organising a small boat crossing from Algeria to the coast of Orihuela with four migrants on board, including at least one child.

According to the Valencian High Court of Justice, the vessel left the Algerian coast on 14 November 2022. Prosecutors allege that the three defendants travelled with the group and that the passengers had paid money for the journey. The prosecution describes the boat as precarious and lacking adequate safety conditions for a crossing that involves several hours in open sea.

The Guardia Civil intercepted the vessel near the Orihuela coast two days after it set off. All occupants were taken ashore and placed at the disposal of the authorities, prompting the investigation that has led to the current criminal proceedings.

The prosecution argues that the defendants were aware of the risks involved, particularly given that a minor was among those on board. The trial is due to hear evidence from the accused and from officers involved in the interception.
