A series of fires in Orihuela Costa between May and July over the past three years has raised fresh concerns about safety and prevention measures along the coast. The most recent incident on Sunday saw flames engulf woodland close to residential areas and the Villamartín golf course. Some residents left their homes voluntarily as a precaution. Just hours earlier, a car caught fire at the AP-7 toll in La Zenia.

Previous incidents include a June 2023 fire in the rambla of the Nacimiento river, another in 2024 that burned more than 12 hectares between Campoamor and Las Ramblas, and a May 2025 blaze that damaged five homes. Although emergency services responded quickly in each case, residents say the repeated fires highlight ongoing risks.

The Costa Campoamor Residents’ Association has requested an urgent meeting with the councillor for the coast, Manuel Mestre, to address concerns about infrastructure, maintenance and public services. In a letter sent on 24 June, the group warned that neglected ravines and overgrown vegetation pose serious fire and flood dangers, particularly during the summer season.

Residents are calling for regular clearing of the Nacimiento river and Barranco Rubio through their urban stretches, as well as improved fire prevention systems. They argue that poor maintenance, combined with increasing development, could lead to severe damage to property and potential risk to life.
