The second heatwave of the summer has begun across the Valencian Community, with Spain’s State Meteorological Agency forecasting at least three days of extreme and persistent heat. Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C on Monday, climbing to as high as 44°C on Tuesday in southern coastal areas of Valencia province.

A red alert for “extraordinary danger” has been issued for districts including La Ribera, La Safor and La Costera between midday and 8pm on Tuesday. Orange warnings are in place across much of the region, with highs of 41°C in northern coastal Valencia, 42°C inland in the south, and up to 39°C in parts of Castellón.

Valencian emergency authorities have released a special health warning, highlighting the risks to elderly people and those with cardiovascular conditions. Officials have urged the public to avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. According to Spain’s Carlos III Health Institute, 70 deaths have been attributed to heat so far this summer, with 61 recorded since 22 June.

Authorities are also warning of a very high wildfire risk. Fire crews have been tackling a blaze near Soneja that has spread towards Azuébar, with more than 15 aircraft and over 200 personnel deployed to prevent the flames reaching the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park.
