Orihuela Council has launched the first phase of a new electric bike parking network, installing four secure and covered modular units across the town. The facilities are located at Miguel Hernández Intermodal Station, El Palmeral sports centre, and the UMH campuses in Desamparados and Salesas.

Each module provides space for up to 10 bicycles in individual lockers, allowing users to store bikes, helmets and belongings safely while charging them. The units are powered by solar panels, include LED lighting, and are free to reserve via a mobile app. The €164,983 project is funded through EU Next Generation grants as part of the Sustainable Tourism Plan.

The council has also introduced a new digital audio guide system at 50 locations across the town and coast, including the Cathedral, the Miguel Hernández House Museum and the Palmeral de San Antón. Information is available in 36 languages using NaviLens codes, readable from up to 15 metres away, alongside 16 accessible information totems.

A separate €8,345 contract has provided wireless headsets for guided tours, enabling visitors to hear clearly without crowding around guides. Tourism councillor Gonzalo Montoya said the initiatives mark an important step in making Orihuela’s cultural heritage more accessible and sustainable.
