The Mayor of Los Alcázares has reaffirmed the council’s firm opposition to plans for a medical waste incinerator in the municipality’s industrial estate. Mario Pérez Cervera said the local authority “will not change its position” on the controversial project.

The council has rejected an appeal lodged by the developer, Ecology Recycling Technologies, against a plenary decision taken in March 2026. That decision introduced a one-year suspension on granting licences to potentially polluting industries across the municipality.

Mr Pérez said the council intends to amend local planning regulations to ensure that neither now nor in the future can a similar type of industry be established in Los Alcázares. The proposal has sparked concern locally, particularly given the town’s proximity to the Mar Menor.

The dispute centres on the company’s plan to build a plant to treat and incinerate healthcare waste. The council maintains that its temporary suspension of licences is a necessary precaution while it reviews planning rules.
