A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked with a hammer in Torre Pacheco on Thursday evening.
The victim, a Senegalese national, was struck repeatedly on the head in Avenida Juan Carlos I, in the centre of the town. Emergency services took him to the Virgen de La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia, where he was admitted alive but with extremely serious injuries.
A second Senegalese man was also injured during the incident. He suffered a wound to the neck after being attacked with a broken bottle. Witnesses alerted the Emergency Coordination Centre, and Local Police officers were first to arrive at the scene, where they found one of the men lying on the ground covered in blood.
A young Algerian man has been arrested in connection with the attack. The Guardia Civil has taken over the investigation and is gathering witness statements and security camera footage to establish the circumstances and motive behind the assault.
