The Vega Baja University Hospital has announced plans to open a new Paediatric Rehabilitation Unit as part of its service expansion. The unit will provide specialist care for children with neurological disorders, developmental delays and musculoskeletal conditions.

Around 45 children each month are currently treated by the Orihuela Health Department, with approximately 200 physiotherapy sessions carried out monthly. One of the most common conditions referred for rehabilitation is infant torticollis, often caused by posture, alongside cases such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular diseases and acquired brain injuries.

The new unit will allow multidisciplinary care in a single location, bringing together rehabilitation doctors, neuropediatricians and physiotherapists. Amparo Segarra, Head of Rehabilitation at the hospital, said the service will ensure children receive co-ordinated support from the earliest stages of development, while reducing the need for families to travel between centres.

The facility will form part of a new 500 square metre Paediatrics outpatient area, which will include six consulting rooms, a Paediatric Day Hospital, a nursing room and adapted waiting areas. The expansion is expected to improve early diagnosis, ongoing monitoring and personalised therapy programmes for children and their families.
