Torrevieja City Council has announced a series of major updates affecting the town’s port area, following the recent opening of the Paseo del Mar leisure centre. Speaking on Monday, Mayor Eduardo Dolón confirmed that fairground operators will return to the newly renovated Paseo de La Libertad in mid-July, in time for the Virgen del Carmen festivities. A new road running through the port is also due to open to traffic in the coming days.

The council has approved the tender for the first 40 stalls of the hippie craft market, each valued at 22,000 euros, with a total contract price of 1.3 million euros. These are expected to be installed by October near the Customs House and Mínguez Pier. Priority will be given to long-standing traders, although stallholders must provide official certification from the Generalitat Valenciana confirming that their products are genuinely artisanal.

The redevelopment of the former Paseo de La Libertad site, awarded for more than seven million euros, has been granted an extension until 31 July. The delay has been linked to supply disruptions and the pending opening of the new access road. The budget remains unchanged.

The council has also confirmed that Plaza de Capdepont will be renamed Plaza de España. A memorial to the victims of the August 1938 bombing will be installed there, in agreement with all political parties. New local by-laws will regulate fair and market activities, with higher public space fees expected.
