Torrevieja Council has closed a 350-metre stretch of coastline between the natural pools on the Juan Aparicio seafront and the Hombre del Mar monument after routine water tests found raised levels of intestinal enterococci. The decision was taken early on Wednesday morning as a precaution.

The weekly samples are collected during the summer season by the Generalitat Valenciana’s Directorate General for Water. Although the levels detected are not described as alarming, they exceed recommended thresholds for safe bathing and indicate possible faecal contamination. Red flags have been raised and fencing installed to prevent access, while the nearby natural pools closer to Playa del Cura remain open.

The council has said it wants to reassure residents and visitors, stressing that the issue is limited to the specific control point analysed. Additional samples have been taken by the municipal water company, Agamed, and the area will reopen once tests confirm the water meets quality standards.

The affected stretch is popular with bathers due to its central location and shelter from waves. A major sewage pumping station, which handles around 40% of the শহ’s wastewater, is located nearby. The regional sanitation authority, EPSAR, has planned an investment of more than six million euros to upgrade the infrastructure.
