Part of the wooden fencing along the seafront walkway to Cala Cortina in Cartagena has been vandalised and thrown down an embankment. Some of the benches installed along the route have also been damaged with graffiti.
The path, which opened two years ago, has become one of the city’s most popular walking and running routes. It is valued not only for its sea views but also for its heritage, as it passes historic coastal defence batteries including San Isidoro, Santa Florentina and the Santa Ana fortifications.
The route has been awarded Blue Trail status by ADEAC, the same organisation that grants Blue Flag awards to beaches, in recognition of its environmental and cultural importance. The latest damage has raised concerns about the preservation of the area.
