Benidorm has activated a special security operation for the 2026 World Cup following an 18% increase in flights from the UK to Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport during the tournament. The council expects a significant influx of British fans, particularly with the city regarded as Spain’s leading destination for UK tourists.

The Councillor for Public Safety, Jesús Carrobles, and the head of the Local Police, José Carlos Amorós, said the operation will be coordinated with the National Police. The deployment will adapt to the progress of the competition and potential fixtures involving England and Scotland, which traditionally attract large crowds in the city.

Police said data from tour operators indicates a sharp rise in air connections between the UK and Alicante during the World Cup period. Many supporters are expected to gather in Benidorm’s bars and venues equipped with large screens to watch matches live, as seen during the Euro final two years ago, when a specific operation was required.

Reinforcements will be in place for higher-risk matches and games played overnight due to time differences with host countries the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Police Intervention Unit will support early England fixtures. Officials stressed the operation is preventive and aimed at ensuring safety and peaceful coexistence throughout the busy summer season.
