A 21-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being arrested by the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja on suspicion of violent robbery, extortion and vehicle theft. He appeared before the investigating court in Torrevieja, which ordered his provisional imprisonment while enquiries continue.

The arrest forms part of the Guardia Civil’s Safe Commerce Plan, launched after reports of threats and financial demands targeting traders and residents in Torrevieja and nearby towns. Officers said many alleged victims were initially reluctant to come forward, fearing reprisals or damage to their businesses.

Investigators believe the suspect approached several business owners offering supposed protection services in exchange for regular payments. According to statements gathered, the demands were accompanied by intimidation and references to alleged links with Eastern European criminal organisations.

Among the incidents under investigation is a violent robbery on 4 April, when the suspect allegedly entered a shop, threatened an employee and took cash and goods. A second case on 19 April involved the alleged theft of a vehicle through intimidation, followed by a demand for money for its return. The investigation remains ongoing.
