Orihuela City Council has begun the process of auctioning three municipal plots in Orihuela Costa, in a move it says could generate at least 21.6 million euros for coastal infrastructure projects. The announcement was made on Monday by the mayor and councillors for Heritage and the Coast.

The three plots, located in La Ciñuelica, La Cuerda and Peña del Águila, cover just over 30,000 square metres in total and could allow the construction of 255 homes. The council expects competitive bidding to increase the final figure beyond the starting price.

Heritage councillor Matías Ruiz said the sale comes at a favourable time for the property market and aims to convert municipal land into improved services and facilities. Companies will have 15 days to submit bids, with contracts awarded to the highest offer.

However, previous land sales have drawn criticism after funds were spent elsewhere in the municipality. Coastal residents have also questioned the availability of land for public facilities, including a second health centre and a new school. The council insists all proceeds from this auction will be reinvested in Orihuela Costa, particularly in water infrastructure and essential services.
