Local and regional officials have visited the newly completed Vereda del Vinco project in San Javier, where a sustainable drainage system is already helping rainwater filter naturally into the ground during storms.

The development combines flood prevention measures with new public green space. A winding, floodable pathway acts as a drainage channel during heavy rain, directing excess water away while allowing it to soak into the ground rather than overwhelm drains and streets. Several infiltration ponds have also been created, which double as play and recreation areas in dry weather.

Permeable paving, ramps and improved pedestrian access form part of the works, alongside a larger bridge designed to cope with greater volumes of water. Regional Infrastructure Minister Jorge García Montoro said green solutions can help mitigate rainfall in urban areas, but stressed they cannot replace major hydraulic infrastructure projects.

San Javier’s mayor, José Miguel Luengo, said further flood prevention measures are still urgently needed upstream, particularly around the Cobatillas ravine. The project was jointly funded by San Javier Town Hall, the regional government and European Union recovery funds.
