Torrevieja Council has approved an additional €166,892 to complete the rehabilitation of the Salt Industry Interpretation Centre. While exterior works on the former railway halt are nearly finished, further investment is required to finalise the museum design and address structural deterioration discovered after work began in late 2025.

The extra funding represents a 33% increase on the original €498,000 contract, including VAT, awarded last October to ACSA, part of the Sorigué Group. The initial European funding allocation proved insufficient once unforeseen renovation work was identified.

The new allocation comes from two sources: €60,500 in surplus from the drafting of the new bus station project and €106,392 from the Administration and Information Society budget line. The council’s finance and tourism departments have agreed this mechanism to advance the costs while awaiting formal authorisation from the Ministry for additional European funds.

The centre, closed since the early 2010s due to staffing shortages, will feature two exhibition areas covering the history of salt extraction in Torrevieja and salt production worldwide. Plans include immersive displays designed to resemble large salt blocks, audiovisual spaces, and recreated historic elements outside the building.
