Two associations in San Miguel de Salinas have submitted objections against an application to legalise an Olympic shooting range built on 61,555 square metres of land near Sierra Escalona. The San Miguel Arcángel residents’ association and Friends of Sierra Escalona (ASE) are urging the Valencian government to reject the project’s Declaration of Community Interest (DIC).

They argue that more than half the site affects strategic forest land protected under the regional forest action plan, and warn of very high erosion risk. The groups also say the development borders a Special Protection Area for Birds and lies within the recently approved Natural Resources Management Plan for Sierra Escalona. They highlight concerns about noise affecting wildlife, including the endangered Bonelli’s eagle.

The residents’ association further claims the works may have damaged an Iberian Bronze Age archaeological site listed in the municipal catalogue. According to the objections, much of the complex has been operating since at least 2019 without full municipal or regional authorisation.

The mayor, Juan de Dios Fresneda, has said the DIC decision rests solely with the Generalitat. He has acknowledged the range is operating and described restoration of the land as difficult, while stating he does not support the installation. The shooting club says the facility would promote Olympic sport, attract international competitions and create local economic benefits.
