Orihuela has once again been recognised as one of Spain’s leading coastal destinations, ranking second nationwide for Blue Flag beaches. The town has secured 18 flags, the same number as Cullera and Águilas, and just behind Sanxenxo. Ten of its eleven beaches have received the award from the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education.

However, Cala La Mosca, also known as Playa Flamenca, has failed to regain its Blue Flag for the second consecutive year. The beach has faced repeated pollution issues in recent summers, including temporary closures in 2024 after contamination was detected. The Blue Flag was reinstated at neighbouring Cala Estaca last year, but Playa Flamenca continues to miss out.

Earlier investigations revealed that wastewater discharges reaching the cove were caused by an irregular connection to the rainwater drainage network. The link, previously unknown to both the water company and the council, allowed sewage to flow into a ravine leading directly to the beach. Although prosecutors found no criminal offence, the fault was identified and corrected.

Elsewhere in the Vega Baja, Blue Flags have been awarded to beaches in Guardamar del Segura, Pilar de la Horadada and Torrevieja, as well as several marinas. Torrevieja’s council said the recognition reflects continued investment in beach infrastructure, services and sustainability, as the town’s population grows beyond 110,000 and swells further during the summer season.
