More than 3,000 ladybirds have been released across Murcia’s community gardens to help protect plants from aphids and other harmful insects. The Ayuntamiento is repeating the initiative for a second consecutive year, choosing a natural solution instead of chemical products.

The first release took place on Monday morning at Molino del Amor, where Councillor for Urban Planning, Agriculture and Environment Antonio Navarro joined the distribution of nearly 200 insects. He said the measure reflects the council’s commitment to sustainable and ecological practices, while also promoting environmental awareness.

The species used is Adalia bipunctata, or the two-spot ladybird. It is considered particularly effective against aphids, spider mites and other small pests that are more common at this time of year. Around 3,000 ladybirds are being distributed across 12 leisure-garden areas, with larger plots such as Aljucer, El Puntal and Joven Futura receiving nearly 400 each.

The insects are released early in the morning, when temperatures are lower, to encourage them to remain on the crops. City officials say the aim is to protect the gardens, support biodiversity and promote a more sustainable approach to managing urban green spaces.
