Residents in Orihuela Costa have expressed their frustrations during a protest against the local council’s failure to hold district meetings. This demonstration, which drew in over three hundred participants, highlighted the perceived lack of democratic representation and dissatisfaction with municipal services. Protesters pointed to the absence of the mayor, Pepe Vegara, who has failed to respond to calls for accountability, further igniting community discontent.

The Partido para la Independencia de Orihuela Costa is actively encouraging local residents to engage politically, emphasising the importance of registering to vote. Currently, many residents do not participate in the electoral process, which limits their influence in local governance. The PIOC aims to help more residents register before the next elections in two years and gain representation that reflects the needs of the community.

Community members have voiced concerns over service deficiencies and the inadequate running of district assemblies. Many residents believe the municipality is failing to address their issues and are demanding accountability, as promises made about improving service delivery have not been fulfilled. Lack of communication from local leaders has left community members feeling unheard and overlooked.

Despite growth in the region’s population, with significant numbers registered in Orihuela Costa, residents feel they continue to be neglected. Many are hopeful that through collective action, the community can advocate for better local governance and services that meet their needs, ensuring their voices are heard in the political arena.
