Recent findings indicate a notable recovery of wildlife in the Segura River, with otters being sighted again in the region. This marks a significant moment for the area’s ecosystem, highlighting efforts from environmental groups such as the Keuper Association and the Association for Rural Development of Campo de Elche, which have been tracking the population of this mammal.

Otters had previously vanished from the region since the nineteen sixties due to human activity, hunting, and water pollution that drastically reduced fish populations, their primary food source. Interestingly, the return of these fascinating creatures has been recorded several times in recent years, notably in May twenty twenty, when expert Daniel Martínez observed two otters near the Alfeitamí weir in Almoradí.

The latest sightings were captured using camera traps at the old Sant Antoni mill, located one kilometre from the river’s mouth in Guardamar. These findings signify not only an ecological recovery but also a potential shift towards a more balanced environment along the river.

Research will continue to monitor the otter population and assess the impact of microplastics on their diet through analysis of their droppings. This combination of monitoring and study reflects the commitment of local organisations to conserve wildlife and enhance the river’s health.
