La Guardia Civil, in conjunction with the Carabinieri of Italy, has successfully apprehended a dangerous fugitive who has been evading justice since twenty twenty-three. The individual faced several criminal charges, including leading a mafia-style organisation engaged in large-scale drug trafficking, extortion, and illegal arms and explosives trafficking. An European Arrest Warrant was issued by Italian authorities in December for his capture.

Following the warrant’s issuance, the fugitive fled Italy and sought refuge in Spain, where he attempted to establish a new life. The Italian investigative unit, in charge of the case, reached out to the Guardia Civil to collaborate in a joint operation aimed at locating and apprehending him.

After several months of investigations and intelligence sharing, the Officers of the Justice Fugitives Team within the Central Operational Unit of the Guardia Civil managed to trace the fugitive to Alicante, where he had been living under a false identity with close family members. Surveillance revealed that he frequently visited Barcelona for personal matters.

During his arrest, investigators found false identities that facilitated his evasion from the police, along with a significant amount of cash, high-end watches, gold pieces, and communication devices. He has since been handed over to the Central Investigation Court and awaits extradition to Italy for trial. This operation highlights the effectiveness of international police cooperation in tackling serious crimes.
