Two soldiers from the Spanish Army have sustained serious injuries in a traffic accident while they were involved in firefighting efforts in Galicia. The incident occurred at around eleven twenty in the morning on the A fifty-two motorway, near Trasmiras, Ourense. Their military vehicle collided with a livestock truck, resulting in one soldier being evacuated by helicopter due to critical injuries, while the other was transported to hospital via ambulance.

Emergency services, including the Galician Emergency Service and local firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene and confirmed that there were no individuals trapped in the wreckage. Defence Minister Margarita Robles expressed her hopes for a swift recovery for the injured soldiers during a Senate appearance to discuss the government’s response to the ongoing wildfires.

Robles emphasised the bravery of the soldiers, one of whom is undergoing surgery for severe injuries. She extended condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives due to the wildfires, also highlighting the courage of military personnel who continue to work tirelessly in perilous conditions.

The Defence Minister acknowledged the risks faced by the Armed Forces as they combat the fires and pledged that the government is committed to providing the necessary resources to tackle this ongoing crisis. Robles is expected to detail the deployment of state resources in the Senate meeting as part of a response to escalating fire threats across the region.
