Santander has experienced an intense downpour, registering sixty-three point six litres of rain per square metre in just one hour. This is the second highest figure recorded in the history of Cantabria, falling short of the all-time record set in nineteen eighty-three. The State Meteorological Agency has characterised these exceptional rainfall levels, which have caused significant disruptions across the city.

Flooding has occurred in various areas, leading to the closure of tunnels and severe traffic congestion in both the city centre and main access points. Complications also arose in nearby municipalities, including Camargo, Astillero, and Bezana. Fortunately, Gema Igual, the mayor of Santander, has reported that the situation is returning to almost normal following the storm’s passage.

During the peak of the storms, emergency services attended to a total of ninety-five incidents within a two-hour window, responding to one hundred and eighty-three calls related to the heavy rain. These incidents mostly involved water accumulation on public roads, flooding of garages, businesses, and residences, as well as damage to infrastructure such as manholes.

The State Meteorological Agency maintained a red weather warning for the coastal area until ten o’clock this morning, which has since changed to an orange warning lasting until three o’clock this afternoon. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as further weather warnings are in effect.
