On the seventeenth of August, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the Operational Coordination Centre against Wildfires in Ourense. During his visit, he expressed the need for a national pact aimed at mitigating and adapting to the climate emergency in response to the surge of wildfires affecting Spain. Sánchez emphasised that this initiative requires cooperation from all public administrations, parliamentary groups, civil society, scientific institutions, businesses, and trade unions across the country.

Sánchez stated that there needs to be a profound reflection on how to recalibrate capacities for both response and prevention measures related to climate emergencies. He called for clear responses to issues affecting citizens, regardless of the season, to improve readiness against severe wildfires and other related disasters.

The proposed national pact aims to set up a strategic approach that anticipates better responses to the escalating effects of climate change. Sánchez highlighted the necessity of moving the climate emergency issue beyond partisan politics, insisting that actions should be informed by scientific evidence.

In addition to addressing the climate emergency, Sánchez also made it clear that there cannot be impunity for those responsible for igniting the wildfires. He pledged that the Spanish government would do everything possible to assist affected residents in returning to normalcy, which includes immediate measures for fire extinction and resources for reconstruction efforts.
