Seventy-five migrants have reached the shores of the Balearic Islands this weekend, arriving on six small boats intercepted by maritime rescue teams and the Civil Guard. On Sunday, the Civil Guard located eight migrants in Sant Josep de sa Talaia, while a group of four was intercepted on a beach in Santanyí, Mallorca. The first boat was spotted at three thirty in the morning, with additional interceptions reported throughout the day.

Additionally, four boats carrying a total of sixty-three individuals arrived in Formentera. The first vessel, with sixteen occupants, was located at one fifty in the afternoon at Punta Sa Fragata. Another boat, carrying seventeen migrants, was intercepted later at eight thirty in the evening at Es Migjorn beach. Rescue teams also saved eighteen migrants from a boat spotted south of Formentera, and the final boat of the day was intercepted at nine oh five in the evening.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of two hundred and thirty-seven boats have reached the Balearic coasts, bringing at least four thousand four hundred and thirty-one migrants, most of whom are from North Africa and Sub-Saharan regions. This figure reflects a continuing trend of irregular maritime migration to the archipelago.

In comparison, the year two thousand and twenty-four saw five thousand eight hundred and eighty-two migrants arrive irregularly by sea, according to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior’s Annual Security Report. The increasing number of landings continues to raise concerns over maritime safety and the challenges faced by local authorities in managing migrant arrivals.
