A salmonella outbreak in the municipality of Barbastro has affected over four hundred individuals, with seven people requiring hospitalisation. Among those admitted are five minors at the Hospital de Barbastro and two others, a young woman and another minor, at the Hospital San Jorge in Huesca. Currently, all patients are reported to be stable, and health officials indicate that some cases have involved dehydration, which was addressed at home. The affected population includes vulnerable individuals or those with pre-existing health conditions.

As of now, four hundred and twenty-four people have sought treatment from different facilities of the Aragonese Health Service due to symptoms associated with salmonella, which typically include nausea, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. While it is estimated that the incubation period for salmonellosis has concluded, which is generally up to seventy-two hours, health authorities predict that more people may visit health centres for controls or persistent symptoms.

Public health sources have confirmed the bacteria responsible for the outbreak is indeed salmonella. Investigations are ongoing, and health officials have collected samples of potentially contaminated food items, including meat products and any foods containing eggs or sauces such as mayonnaise or cream. The health authorities emphasise the importance of symptomatic treatment, staying well-hydrated, and adhering to a bland diet free of dairy products.

Additionally, the health administration has highlighted the cooperation of all involved establishments and the organisers of the Vinos del Somontano Festival, which is linked to the outbreak’s origin. They advise individuals with chronic diseases or ongoing symptoms to promptly visit health centres for further assistance.
