The Police Nacional have discovered the body of a thirty-four-year-old woman in Don Benito, a town in Badajoz. They have arrested her forty-one-year-old partner, who is suspected of murder in what is being investigated as a case of domestic violence. The Government Delegation in Extremadura has confirmed that this incident could bring the total number of women killed due to gender-based violence in Spain to twenty-four this year.

The victim, a mother of four, had been reported missing on the thirtieth of July, and her body was located in the early hours of the sixth of August near Calle Canalejas. The woman’s case had been monitored under the VioGén system until August twenty-twenty-one, after which it became inactive, with no current complaints or protection orders recorded against her partner.

After the discovery, the local council held a minute of silence in memory of the deceased and has declared an official day of mourning. The General Director of the Institute of Women in Extremadura stated that the psychological support team is on standby to assist the family and the children, who may require specialised psychological care due to this tragic event.

The Ministry of Equality is gathering more information on this suspected case of gender-based violence, which marks the second such incident in Extremadura this year.
