During a press conference at La Moncloa, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reviewed his government’s accomplishments and outlined future priorities. He noted that securing eighty-six percent of votes in Congress has not been easy, referencing the determination required when parliamentary support was lacking. Sánchez expressed optimism about Spain’s trajectory, highlighting record employment, economic growth, and low levels of inequality and poverty in recent years.
Among the ambitious plans for the next two years, Sánchez announced an historical extension of parental leave. Families with children born after the second of August twenty twenty-four will benefit from three additional weeks of paid leave, alongside the existing sixteen weeks. He also mentioned an increase in support for single-parent families and a significant investment in health and education, including new health programmes and educational placements.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackle climate change, announcing initiatives such as new conservation zones and a focus on sustainable mobility. He also underscored the importance of reinforcing Spain’s institutions by combatting corruption and enhancing the judicial system, with a proposed state plan to uphold democratic values.
Lastly, Sánchez addressed international issues, announcing a forthcoming aid shipment of essential food supplies to Gaza, while stressing the need for humanitarian corridors to alleviate suffering. He urged an immediate ceasefire and underscored the moral imperative to act amidst ongoing tragedies.
