Emergency services are currently conducting a search operation for two individuals who were swept away by the River Foix in Cubelles. The search was prompted when witnesses reported the incident after the river’s flow increased significantly due to the opening of flood gates at the Foix reservoir. Authorities were alerted just before nine o’clock this evening, as the river’s current became dangerously strong, surpassing two hundred cubic metres per second.
The two missing individuals reportedly attempted to cross the river on a wooden footbridge near the river mouth, which was compromised by the swift current. The Catalan Water Agency had previously issued a warning about rising water levels downstream from the dam, anticipating an increase in flow due to heavy rainfall.
A comprehensive search operation has been mobilised, involving sixteen units including special underwater action teams. The local police, firefighters, and maritime rescue services are also participating in this operation, utilising drones and a rescue helicopter. Authorities had been on heightened alert, with protective measures in place, advising residents against approaching the rivers.
At the moment, the water being discharged from the Foix reservoir was recorded at one hundred sixty-nine cubic metres per second, with expectations for continued increases throughout the night. This incident highlights the importance of heeding weather warnings and exercising caution during periods of heavy rain.
