The Popular Party (PP) and Vox have called for the immediate resignation of Spain’s Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz. This follows his indictment for allegedly revealing secrets related to businessman Alberto González Amador, who is associated with the President of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the PP, expressed through social media that it’s time for both García Ortiz and those giving him directives to step down.

PP spokesperson Borja Sémper highlighted that this situation threatens the moral standing of the government. He stated that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been evading scrutiny for over forty days, refusing to answer journalists’ questions. Sémper believes that the government should take immediate action and remove García Ortiz, emphasising the significant impact this scandal has on the public perception of the government and its institutions.

Vox’s national spokesperson, José Antonio Fúster, labelled the current judicial situation the largest act of corruption in Spanish history. He demanded García Ortiz’s resignation or immediate removal, citing a lack of independence from the Prime Minister as a critical issue. Fúster also expressed support for judges and prosecutors who are planning protests against judicial reforms perceived to undermine judicial independence.

The controversy surrounds an investigation that began last October regarding allegations of misconduct and progress within the judicial system. The indictment and the accompanying criticisms raise serious concerns about the integrity and independence of Spain’s judicial institutions.
