The Directorate General of Traffic has introduced a new online procedure for exchanging foreign driving licenses, making the process much simpler for residents. Previously, citizens needed to schedule an appointment at their local traffic office, creating an additional hurdle for many.

The online system is available specifically for countries with which Spain has mutual agreements for recognition and exchange of driving licenses. This innovation eliminates the need for prior appointments, allowing applicants to receive all necessary information online. They will only need to visit the traffic office to hand in their valid original driving license and collect a provisional authorization to drive until their official license arrives by post.

To use this electronic service, applicants must be registered with Cl@ve or possess a digital certificate. If the license is from certain countries such as Algeria or Brazil, a prior verification of the license is required before proceeding with the online application. Wait times for this verification can differ based on each country’s response time.

Once the foreign authority provides confirmation, applicants receive an email indicating whether their exchange request has been accepted or rejected. If accepted, applicants can continue with their exchange process by providing the necessary details. Additionally, those holding licenses from countries that do not require a prior locator will be directed straight to the exchange request.
