Spain and Portugal are set to enhance their energy interconnections with Europe as they prepare to send joint letters to Brussels and France. This initiative comes from the Vice President of Spain’s Government, Sara Aagesen, following a recent blackout in the Iberian Peninsula. Both nations seek to accelerate planned energy interconnections, highlighting the importance of this project for improving system robustness.

Aagesen had a telematic meeting with Portuguese Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho, where they discussed the challenges posed by the electrical blackout that occurred on April twenty-eight. The letters to be sent will request meetings with the European Energy Commissioner, Dan Jorgensen, and French Industry Minister, Marc Ferracci, to address the lack of energy interconnection via the Pyrenees.

The urgency of these communications has been emphasized by Carvalho, who noted that a stronger connection with France would have expedited the recovery process after the blackout. The letters will also demand a meeting between the three ministers to discuss the matter, preferably in Paris or Brussels, to underscore the symbolic significance.

Recently, the France-Spain interconnection project in the Bay of Biscay reached a milestone with the commencement of constructions in two thousand twenty-three. Once completed, this project is expected to double the existing capacity, although it will still fall short of the European Union’s interconnection targets set for two thousand twenty and two thousand thirty.
