Santiago Abascal, leader of the political party Vox, has deemed the fine of eight hundred sixty-two thousand four hundred ninety-six euros imposed by the Court of Accounts ‘absolutely unjust’. He claims the decision stems from political motivations aimed at undermining Vox’s viability. Speaking at a May Day event in Fuenlabrada, Abascal stated that the fine arises from donating practices he deems legal and argues that such penalties threaten the integrity of political dialogue in Spain.
Abascal expressed confidence that the fine would not affect the credibility of his party, asserting that their standing remains ‘intact’. He anticipates that Vox will win its appeal to the Supreme Court against this sanction. He further accused the current government and its institutions of corruption, suggesting that the ruling was a response to Vox’s criticism of the administration.
In a broader discussion of funding for unions and political institutions, Abascal suggested that organisations such as unions and NGOs should rely solely on contributions from their members rather than taxpayer money. He believes that the current system allows certain groups to protect their interests at the expense of the workers they claim to represent.
He concluded that the economic policies of the government are hurting ordinary workers, freelancers, and small businesses, particularly highlighting the impact of what he calls a disastrous government supported by both the Popular Party and the Socialist Party. Abascal’s remarks reflect a contentious political landscape where financial accountability and the role of public funding are hotly debated issues.
