Spanish police have confirmed the completion of their investigation into the murder of Belfast resident John George. Mr George went missing in December twenty twenty four, and his body was located on seventh January in a remote lemon grove. Authorities reported he had suffered multiple stab wounds and gunshots to his chest and face. In connection with this case, Jonny Smyth, aged twenty-six, has been named the primary suspect following his extradition from Portugal earlier this month.

Smyth was apprehended in Braga, Portugal, on twenty fifth March, after international arrest warrants were circulated by Interpol. Another suspect, identified as Czech national Michal Maly, is currently on bail but remains under investigation as an alleged accomplice. Spanish civil authorities have ruled out any further arrests, stating that existing evidence implicates both suspects in Mr George’s last moments.

Investigators shared that Smyth abandoned his two pet dogs and fled Spain shortly after Mr George was reported missing. Following intensive searches in the area, officers discovered the victim’s body in Rojales, after they had already identified Smyth and Maly as potential suspects. Spanish police have released new video footage showing property searches and the location where Mr George’s remains were found.

The Civil Guard affirmed that they have successfully concluded their investigation, stating that Mr George was in the company of both suspects just before his disappearance. The authorities acted promptly, leading to the request for a European arrest warrant that resulted in Smyth’s arrest in Portugal.
