A Madrid court has set a hearing for the fourteenth of May concerning the controversial appointment of Cristina Álvarez as advisor to Begoña Gómez, the spouse of the Prime Minister. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado will oversee the proceedings, which will include testimonies from Alfredo González, who managed the appointment proposal, and Raúl Díaz Silva, former personnel coordinator at Moncloa.

Alfredo González’s previous testimony revealed that he has little recollection of Álvarez and the majority of individuals he processed appointments for. He noted that during a transitional government period, he was responsible for various temporary appointments and stated that he submitted proposals to the competent authority without necessarily knowing the candidates personally. This assertion raised eyebrows for the judge, who anticipated a more rigorous selection process for taxpayer-funded positions.

Félix Bolaños, the current Minister of the Presidency, has distanced himself from the appointment of Álvarez, suggesting it complied with legal hiring standards. Conversely, Álvarez stated that her role was to assist Begoña Gómez with both official and private matters, emphasizing the personal trust between them.

This case has expanded into a broader investigation of possible misconduct, including the misuse of public funds and allegations of influence trafficking and corruption. Both Gómez and Álvarez are among those now being scrutinised in this legal entanglement.
